// two weeks, summed up.

Well, it is my last week as an intern. These past two weeks have been full of perfectly crafted cappuccinos, long walks without a definite destination, photographs of beautiful products, getting lost in the Metropolitan Museum of Art with a bag full of sunglasses, braving the heat wave (sort of; we nearly passed out), interviewing execs at my company, scouring magazines, sifting through job posting after job posting, and creating my internship notebook. That last one has been eating my life. I spent my entire last weekend watching Orange is the New Black (highly recommend) on Netflix, ordering-in Mexican food, and using Photoshop.

Photographed below: Hope, a fellow intern at Isaac Mizrahi & Cameron, intern at Gabriela Moya.

Did I mention that sometime in the whirlwind that has been the last two weeks I got to attend the recording of the Project Runway Allstars season finale?! Because that was a highlight. Pictured (that I recognized): Jeffrey from Project Runway Season 3 & Melissa from Season 10, Zac Posen, Isaac Mizrahi, Christopher from Season 10, (Jeffrey again) & Georgina Chapman.

// little update–stripes & spots.

You guys, NYC has been so rainy. What even is this? Therefore, this week’s outfit post was taken indoors.

DSC_0023 DSC_0027 DSC_0029Outfit details // DV by Dolce Vita Cheetah Print Oxfords (my mom scored this pair for only $20!) // H & M dress // J. Crew mutli-buckle leather belt // Felt hat, thrifted // Smashbox “Infrared” matte red lipstick // Madewell gold bangle // Forever 21 triangle painted earrings //

Things have been busy–I met Isaac this week! It was a brief meeting, but I think the red lipstick helped me to stand out. I didn’t wear this exact outfit, but it was pretty close. The red lips, hat, and shoes stayed the same.

I am focusing my efforts on social media for both Gabriela Moya and Isaac Mizrahi. For GM, I am managing the Pinterest and Facebook (please Like and follow us!) and at IM, I am comparing successful fashion brands and their use of social media. As it turns out, this is pretty extensive. There are even infographics for it. So I’ve been researching and researching and researching. Hope and I are going to begin an intern project at IM next week and we will possibly be styling some upcoming garments/accessories around the city. CROSS YOUR FINGERS. That would be so fun!

Also, how did I forget to mention that I was a featured guest blogger for The Hemborg Wife two weeks ago?? Where has the time gone?? Go read my post (“Accidental First Dates”) and see what Bailie is up to. She took a little trip to Cali and spends most of her days being a lovely wife in Sweden (sounds great, right?!).

// picnics & punks.

Gabriela, being the amazing human that she is, decided that we needed to have a little intern field trip this past Tuesday. She packed a picnic lunch for Cameron, Tatiana, and I (complete with fresh fruit, vegetables, and cheeses) and we found a nice shaded area in the park to gab about our experiences and all get to know each other a little better. It was full of laughter, ghost stories, and childhood memories. After the picnic, we visited the MET’s new fashion exhibit, Punk: Chaos to Couture for a little inspiration. I have never been more excited at the prospect of creating clothing that sends a message, mixes mediums and techniques, and uses so many safety pins. IMG_0035 IMG_0044 IMG_0050 IMG_0053 IMG_0061 IMG_0084 IMG_0088 IMG_0096 IMG_0098 IMG_0100 IMG_0101 IMG_0105And of course, Cameron got some outfit shots (after coffee) while wandering around the East Village in the afternoon. This outfit’s details requires a lot fewer links. Because the entire thing was thrifted at one time or another over the course of the past year. Fun fact: Cameron and I both swiped those hats about 20 minutes before the shoot!

// that’s what friends are for.

Untitled-2The only way to describe this past week was long. It started out with archiving shoes and other amazing pieces at Isaac Mizrahi, followed by a dead cell phone and taxi mishap on Tuesday (he dropped me off on the opposite side of town!), some marketing/social networking for Gabriela Moya, late dinner on Thursday, and finally, on Friday, a 10 hour day full of cutting threads, pinning samples, and stuffing a model into a pair of $700 boots for the Stacy Lomman F/W ’13 photo shoot (behind-the-scenes photos here).

By Friday night, I collapsed into bed, in a pile of fashion-overloaded bliss. Then, I got a package! But not just any package. A care package from Alyssa! I have never been so excited to get mail and so thankful for the friends I have. This thing was heavy. It was full of all of the things we used to cheer each other up when we lived together, from pretzel M&Ms to the ingredients for spaghetti, to a teeny box of wine, to some thrifting gold she found for me. A ton of miniature things: tiny deodorant, tiny notebooks, a tiny fan to deal with the sometimes un-airconditioned train, a teeny face wash, and some new lipstick. And to top it all off, she even included a teensy French press and coffee from Mama Mocha’s, for a little taste of home.

It should also be mentioned that on top of the excellent timing of the box, I received a card in the mail on the fateful Tuesday dinner debacle–and it made me laugh like a 12-year-old boy. Who knew you could even buy these?? Utter genius.

// life of an intern.

“We have this really disorganized, messy closet of clothes from previous lines–even some couture pieces. You guys are going to organize it.”

What I heard, “Here is this closet of beautiful couture pieces; it’s kind of a mess. A glorious, inspiring mess. Have fun!”

What I heard, “Would you like to gawk over the beautiful pictures get more familiar with the new line?”

My schedule’s a little tight–M/TH: Isaac Mizrahi & T/W: Gabriela Moya & F: Stacy Lomman (or one of the other two, depending on the week’s workload). But I like to stay  busy, so it’s been great so far! This past weekend, I met up with Hannah and Barbara (who is just visiting) to tour the city. We went to the Brooklyn Flea and explored Williamsburg & Bushwick until we were too dehydrated to continue (photos here). I did pretty well with staying on budget–a $5 hat and a $10 shirt, plus an iced latte from Toby’s Estate.

// stripes & stripes.

This week has been crazy! Between the grocery mishaps and the missed trains, I somehow lost my metro card. I went through my emptied grocery bags. I went through my wallet (and found three expired cards; I’m talking years old). I went through my purse (it’s known for eating things like my keys, and disposing of them only when it is ready). I looked under my bed, in the refrigerator, in the trash…nowhere to be found. I eventually gave in and just bought a new metro card. But, not until after the closest train station informed me that it could not take debit cards. A kind stranger let me go through using their card. Things have looked up since then!

At work this week, I have been busy with designing fabrics, same as last week. This time, though, I made a geometric, hour-glass-type shape. After I was finished with that, I started work on a blue pattern that you would usually find on fancy china. Sort of kind of only vaguely resembling this. Yesterday, I worked on roughly 15 of those. Or things sort of resembling that. Out of the 15-20, we narrowed it down to three. With those three, we adjusted them into several shades of blue each. Then, finally, this morning, I found out that we had a winner! The client chose one of our patterns. So today was spent blending the two Pantone colors in different ways to make (hopefully!) the perfect design for her pajama line.

And now, an outfit!

// a little afternoon walk.

Today, I continued designing the textile for the pajama line we are working with. Did you know that when you make your own print for a fabric and you want it to look like wood grain, and you stare at it for approximately 5 hours, it begins to look a lot like this? Long lines leading to nowhere, attached to blobs that seem to be moving.

The weather today was so beautiful today that I took a walk to see more of my neighborhood. I finished the day with a little picnic and reading. The elevator window looks like it belongs in a submarine. There is a beautiful cemetery close by. I’ve met three people in my building, so far. This part of town has a lot of interesting architecture. So far, everyone is very nice. Even the people who had to walk around my tripod.

Crew // Ankle booties, Sam Edelman // Leather jacket, Tommy Hilfiger // Necklace, gift from mom: Eclectic Nashville // Glasses, Warby Parker //

// I heard a rumor that it was going to rain today.

So this morning, I scrambled to find an outfit for day three. And after trying on my first three choices and checking the weather, I decided that boots were probably a necessity. It’s been a little bit chilly up here, especially when leaving so early and getting home at dusk, so with the added rain (or possibility of rain), they seemed like a good choice.

The internship has been really great so far! Gabriela is a pleasure to work with. I am currently helping her to do some freelance textile design work for a pajama designer. And am already frustrated with making repeats. I only vaguely remember the misery that is lining things up from my class last semester, so it is a good refresher.

There is another intern working with me, named Tatiana. She is very sweet and is visiting from France! She and I are getting coffee and pastries tomorrow morning and I think she and some of her friends will join me in exploring Brooklyn on Saturday. Also, more fun and upcoming things–a free yoga class at the Grand Central branch of the NY Public Library on Monday!

Almost forgot to mention–I was standing next to BJ Novak on the subway today.
